Back To School Letter From Principal Monticchio

Dear Hughes Parents, Guardians, and Students,

Welcome to the 2019 -2020 school year!  I hope that you have had a wonderful summer and are ready to take on the opportunities and adventures that lie ahead. The Langston Hughes staff and students will be building on the success of last year. The academic achievements at Hughes are the result of the entire community: school staff, students, and parents working together to maintain the focus on performing at the highest level of academic attainment. We could not educate students without the many hours of dedication from the parents and families of our students. Please join the PTA and volunteer in any way during the school day or outside of school hours as your schedule permits. I count it a privilege to work together with you on the mission to develop students that are outstanding scholars and thoughtful citizens.

Please find here some important information you will need to start the year off informed. The teachers will be arriving soon, and we anticipate all our students’ arrival on Monday, August 26, 2019. August 26 is a regular Blue day of school with classes scheduled from 7:30 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. The warning bell rings at 7:25 a.m. Students who are driven to school should be dropped off at Kiss & Ride on Ridge Heights Road, avoiding the faculty parking lot and the bus lanes.

Langston Hughes is benefiting from the capital investment of the taxpayers and undergoing a complete renovation of our building.  Phase 1 of construction has begun, and it will take approximately 14 months to complete.  This year we will stay put in a temporary pattern while the new addition is built.  It will be amazing to watch it go up through the school year.  Due to the construction, the Main Office is in the trailer directly in front of the school for this period, so please, as always, check into the Main office to receive a “Visitor’s” pass before entering the main building.

Students may pick up their class schedules during the Open House on Thursday, August 22, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. During this time, parents are invited to confirm their ParentVue accounts, return completed Emergency Care and Health information forms, purchase Health and Physical Education uniforms, place money on your child’s lunch account, and visit the PTA table for membership and spirit wear.  Student schedules will also be available on SIS ParentVue and StudentVue on August 22 if you are unable to attend.  First period teachers will also be on wall lists when students arrive August 26.  All students will receive a hard copy of their schedule in first period the first day of school.

Students will receive a bulk packet of information the first day of school.  Please look for this packet as it will contain a lot of important information.  Inside the packet, you will find forms which must be returned by September 7th.  Please complete, sign, & date:

On the first day of school students are expected to come prepared with a notebook and a pencil.  A grade level specific school supply list can be found on the Hughes Middle School website. Individual teachers may require additional supplies, and students will be provided with this information once school begins.

Our students are able to carry backpacks throughout the school day.  We will distribute lockers with a “locker on request” policy.  During the first week of school students who would like a locker will have an opportunity to request one with a Locker Request Form. Our Student Services office will process locker requests and distribute locker assignments during the first weeks of school.  Please note that there will still be gym lockers assigned to all students for PE classes and music lockers available to store instruments.

FCPS provides SIS ParentVue Accounts to each FCPS parent. This enables access to view your student’s attendance, grades, and additional information, establishing another form of communication between home and school. Each parent who has not previously activated an account should contact their child’s school to receive an activation key.

Hughes is an AWAY FOR THE DAY school

Students are reminded that on the bus and during lunch the use of electronic devices is limited to texting, playing games, and listening to music only with the use of headphones. Once the school day begins electronic devices and headphone must be out of sight.  If the device is seen or heard during the school day, the item may be confiscated, and a parent may be contacted to pick up the device. If individual teachers allow students to use devices for an instructional purpose, then students may use their electronic device within the classroom.

The cost of lunch is $3.50.  Breakfast is also available in the cafeteria before school at a cost of $1.75.  Information about the free and reduced lunch program will be mailed directly to parents.  Forms must be completed online and returned each year for program eligibility to continue. Students may bring cash to pay for their lunch; parents may write a check to Hughes Middle School; or may pay online through and the money will be deposited to your student’s individual account.  Details can be found at

The Clinic is in room 141 .  For students who will need to take medications during school hours, parents may bring medication and forms to the Hughes Clinic on August 22 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  The physician’s form must be completed, and the medication must be in the original container.  Over the counter medications (e.g. Tylenol) must be in the original package.  A form must be completed for students to carry an Epi-pen or an inhaler.  Students are otherwise never permitted to carry medications with them.   Forms are available at Parents/guardians may also bring medication and forms to the clinic once school starts.  Contact the Public Health Nurse (@email) with any questions about FCPS medication policy.
