May Day May Day

May is Mental Health Awareness Month

“May Day” is an emergency procedure word used internationally as a distress signal in voice-procedure radio communications. The new 9-8-8 number is a suicide and crisis lifeline, similar to 9-1-1 in a medical/safety emergency. One in six youth, aged 6-17, experience a mental health condition each year. Below are some activities to practice at home for mental wellness.

6 Mental Health Activities for Kids to Practice at Home

  • Create a Journal
    • Younger students are better able to communicate their feelings and emotions freely in a creative way.
  • Practice Gratitude Exercises
    • Have students write notes about what they are grateful for and place it a jar (label it thankful jar)
  • Engage in breathing exercises.
    • A couple deep breaths can reset not only your child’s mind.
    • Deep breathing exercises and meditation can increase focus and compassion.
  • Try music therapy.
    • Music can be used to encourage movement and relaxation.
  • Use Stress Balls and other sensory toys.

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) appreciates the role of School Public Health Nurses (PHNs) for their contribution to the health and welfare of all our students. Professional school nurses support the needs of students through their delivery of healthcare, contributions to local school communities, and the promotion of safety, prevention, and wellness throughout the year. Effective Strategies for Dealing with Stress

Although stress is a part of the human experience and can serve a purpose, stress can often be overwhelming and cause intense emotional responses. Stress can disrupt sleep, increase physical reactions, and worsen mental health conditions and substance misuse. Being able to identify, decrease, and manage stress is a crucial life skill to improve well-being and wellness. Additionally, the young people in our care can benefit from seeing adults manage their stress in a healthy way. Here are some tools that can be used to begin practicing positive stress management:

  • Take breaks from watching, reading, or listening to news stories, including those on social media. It’s good to be informed but hearing about traumatic events constantly can be upsetting.
  • Disconnecting from phone, tv, and computer screens for a while.
  • Take care of your body. Make time to unwind.
  • Connect with your community- or faith-based organizations.
  • Recognize when you need more help. If problems continue talk to a psychologist, social worker, or professional counselor.

Additionally, it is important that we recognize that our students deal with stress and worries of their own. Some helpful strategies to aid in assisting our students in decreasing their own stress include:

  • Maintaining a normal routine.
  • Talk, listen, and encourage expression. Listen to your child’s thoughts and feelings and share some of yours.
  • Watch and listen. Be alert for any change in behavior. Any changes in behavior may be signs that your child is having trouble and may need support.
  • Stressful events can challenge a child’s sense of safety and security. Reassure your child about his or her safety and well-being.

Purple Up! Day

To show our support for all our military-connected families, we invite students, families, school employees, and community members to “Purple Up!” for military children. Wear purple on Wednesday, April 17.

Purple symbolizes all branches of the military as a combination of Army green; Marine Corps red; and Coast Guard, Navy, Air Force, and Space Force blue.

FCPS is proud to celebrate National Arab American Heritage Month in April. This special month provides an opportunity to recognize the history and valuable contributions of Arab Americans.

Arab Americans have ancestry in one of the world’s 22 Arab nations, which are located from northern Africa through western Asia. The people of these nations are ethnically, politically, and religiously diverse but share a common cultural and linguistic heritage.

Muslim American Heritage Month is a time for celebrating the history, contributions, culture, and an enhanced understanding of the diverse population of Muslim Americans. View the Fairfax County School Board resolution honoring Muslim American Heritage Month.

Hughes News March 15, 2024

Gov Delivery2 months ago

Greetings, Team Langston Hughes:

March is in like a lion and will go out like a lamb!   The month of March is a time of transitioning from the many winter activities into the anticipation of spring.  In addition, it is the time of year when students often begin to display mastery of new skills and concepts.  As we look for warmer weather and brighter days, we want to keep our “becoming” scholars focused on continuing to strive to do their best.   I appreciate all of the efforts you continue to put in at home to ensure “success” carries over into the school day, as it impacts our academic standing.

Continue to monitor your child’s attendance and grades on ParentVUE.   Here are a few suggestions that will make March reporting a productive time of year:

  • Celebrate your child’s successes/small wins.
  • Choose one or two key areas of improvement.  Goals should be realistic/achievable.  Write them down and refer to them periodically with your child.
  • Consult with your child and teacher when seeking grade- reporting clarity if needed.  Remember grades belong to students.  They are a means by which we teach personal responsibility, natural consequences, good study skills, and the value of hard work.
  • March forward; stay positive.  Spring is on the horizon.

Finally, course selections for the 2024-2025 academic year have been made.   Please be sure to review your child’s course requests.   Contact your child’s school counselor should you have questions or concerns.   As always, I appreciate your continued support and cooperation.

Yours in education,

Principal Mizell

Support for Eating Disorders

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA 2023),

Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. In the United States, 28.8 million Americans will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives.

There is no single cause of an eating disorder. Rather, it is a complex combination of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that converge and set off an individual’s predisposed genetic vulnerability.

In collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department, FCPS has developed a web page with detailed information and resources about eating disorders.  To find out more, please visit the FCPS Eating Disorders website.

In addition to the information on the FCPS website, the National Eating Disorders Association has a toll free, confidential Helpline, 1-800-931-2237.

7th Grade Science Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience (MWEE)

March 18-21, 2024

The Langston Hughes Science 7 Team invites you to join your student and their classmates as you chaperone a small group of students for our annual Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience (MWEE) -- an exciting scientific investigation of the stream valley next to the school in support of our Environmental Science curriculum.

Every year, 7th grade students dive into the details of water quality indicators and the health of their watershed as they explore the many factors that affect our local stream (which flows to the source of our area's drinking water!).

Volunteering Details

We are seeking many volunteers each day to function as chaperones to small groups of students for this (roughly) half-day field experience. Your group will visit a rotation of six educational stations located in and around the stream valley near school, and they will collect data to investigate water chemistry, biodiversity, pollution, land use, and more! The volunteer duties will involve walking on paved paths and will be all-outdoors event. We would love it if you could stay and help all day, but feel free to volunteer for part of the day, if that is what your schedule will allow.

More information about specific volunteer duties will be published here later, so check back often. It is guaranteed to be a fun and memorable day of outdoor scientific investigation.

Please review. available slots below and click on the button to sign up.

Sign Up Genius for MWEE

Please note:  The greatest need is for chaperones on March 18, 19 and 21.  March 21 is just set aside as a rain date if one of the other MWEE days is rained out.

Hughes News February 23, 2024

Gov Delivery2 months 3 weeks ago

Dear Langston Hughes Community:

I hope this message finds you well. I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to the success of our recent I See Me in Reston event. It was an evening filled with fashion, food, and fun, and it wouldn't have been possible without the dedication and hard work of Ms. Boger, Mr. Kyle, and our Langston Leadership Council (LLC). Their efforts truly made it a rocking success.

I also want to extend a huge thank you to all the parents for your generous donations and contributions. Your support is invaluable and greatly appreciated.

This week, we've taken steps to ensure that every student has a planner. It's essential that we emphasize to our children the importance of using their planners to keep track of homework, due dates, major projects, student holidays, and more. If your child is in need of a planner, please don't hesitate to reach out to his/her Connection's teacher. Additionally, you should have received your child’s attendance report card. Regular attendance plays a significant role in a student’s success, so please take a moment to review it. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the attendance report card, please feel free to contact our dean, Mr. “G” Abu Ghannam, at [email protected]. Our goal is to ensure that every child achieves success this semester, and it truly requires a team effort.

Lastly, I want to address a concerning trend we've noticed regarding cell-phone confiscations.  We understand that requiring a parent to pick up a cell phone can potentially be an inconvenience for parents, so help us reiterate FCPS' Away-for-the-Day Policy to your child. Cell phones can cause testing irregularities and other disruptions, so your cooperation in reinforcing this policy is greatly appreciated.

Thank you all for your continued support, understanding, and cooperation. Together, we can continue to make a positive impact on our students' educational journey.

Warm regards,

Principal Mizell

Stress, Trauma & Coping

The experience of traumatic events shapes us, no matter if they happened during childhood or as an adult. Trauma is an event or series of circumstances that have lasting effects on mental, emotional, physical, social, and spiritual well-being. Stress occurs from our minds and bodies identifying an event as physically or emotionally life-threatening. The situation triggers our survival instincts and our natural fight-flight-freeze response. But our minds and bodies cannot sustain being in survival mode for extended periods of time. Sometimes, those who experience considerable amounts of stress and traumatic situations are unable to process or move past what has happened, and as a result are stuck in a loop.

Childhood trauma manifests in many ways and when carried into adulthood, it can create a cycle of adverse experiences that affect future generations. The effects of traumatic events place a heavy burden on the individual, connected families, and communities. Responses to stress and traumatic experiences are personal. There is an intersection between trauma, coping, and substance misuse.

Studies show that about 61% of adults have had at least one adverse childhood experience (ACE) according to the CDC. Trauma prevention and intervention strategies are important. Creating a strategy of helpful coping skills to pull from prepares us to face difficult moments and our levels of resilience and feelings of wellbeing increases also. Here are a few tips to add to your coping strategies:

  1. Seek mental health and/or substance use treatment.
  2. Identify one or more people you feel safe with who can help to hold you accountable.
  3. Develop, repair, or maintain healthy relationships for internal and external support.
  4. Learn and practice self-regulation skills.
  5. Encourage yourself and others.
  6. Find ways to increase your self-esteem.
  7. Focus on your strengths.
  8. Model healthy behavior when dealing with difficult situations.
  9. Identify your triggers and practice ways to work through them.

Tdap and MenACWY  for Rising 7th and 12th Graders

As required by the Code of VA, all students entering 7th grade and 12th grade are required to receive specific immunizations prior to the beginning of school.

All students entering 7th grade are required to receive one dose of each of the following immunizations: Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis booster (Tdap) given at age 7 or older, and Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) given at age 10 or older.

All students entering 12th grade are required to receive one dose of Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) administered at age 16 or older.

Modeling Responsible Behavior

Parents and caregivers play an important role in modeling responsible behavior for their children. Young children will grow to become adolescents and then adults who are responsible for their own behavior. These adults have taken information from what they’ve seen in the world and experienced, to make their own life choices. What do you want them to emulate? What conversations do you want to have? What hopes and dreams would you like to share with them? What will be your legacy? Parents have a huge impact on whether their children use alcohol and drugs. Maintaining a strong, open, and non-judgmental relationship with them will create a safe space for potentially uncomfortable conversations. Children make better decisions when they have positive relationships with their parents. Make sure your actions match your words.

Students participating in the courses listed below receive either Pass (P) or Fail (F) grades. These courses are not standards-based course but are designed as an intervention to build skills in the areas where your child needs additional support. The goal of the course is for your child to make measurable progress in skills. Your child is not assessed in the course against standards. Students who are working to make progress in skills will receive a passing score. The following courses are included: Strategies for Success, Personal Development, Action Literacy, Literacy through Active Participation (LAP), Literacy 7/8, and Math 180. As a reminder, if you prefer for your student to receive a standard letter grade, please contact our Director of Student Services, Michele Beard as soon as possible, at [email protected].

If you do not already have a ParentVUE SIS account, it is very important for you to activate this feature to support your child’s academic success. Through ParentVUE, you can monitor your student’s attendance, grades, and assignments at any time. Once you have activated a ParentVUE account for an FCPS student, you will keep the same account until the student graduates. In addition, all students in the same family can be accessed through the same ParentVUE account. SIS/ParentVUE can be accessed using an app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android device. Do you need help creating a SIS ParentVue account? This video walks you through the steps on how to do so. Watch this video to learn how to set up your account.
