10 Reasons Langston Hughes Stands Out

Hughes Middle School serves students in grades 7 and 8. Known for its diverse student body and strong academic programs, the school emphasizes both academic excellence and personal growth. Hughes offers a wide range of extracurricular activities, including sports, music, and clubs, to support well-rounded student development. The school is dedicated to fostering a positive learning environment and preparing students for success in high school and beyond.

Panther Ambassadors

Reston is a dynamic and expanding community, and we are always ready and excited to welcome new students and their families. Throughout the year, our student Panther Ambassadors greet new enrollees, provide tours, and assist them in acclimating to our school. School counselors and family liaisons are also wonderful resources that provide support and guidance to students and caretakers throughout the school year.

Langston Hughes Is an IB School

As an International Baccalaureate (IB) school, Langston Hughes students are encouraged to set goals and reflect on their development in our Approaches to Learning skill areas: communication, research, self-management, social, and thinking. During the first quarter, they set these goals and will soon reflect on their progress by citing evidence from IB assessments, as well as other in-class and extracurricular activities.

Community Comes First

Langston Hughes students complete thousands of hours of service throughout the Reston and surrounding communities each year, working to complete their individual middle school service commitments of 15 hours. Organizing a clothing drive, running after-school clubs at nearby elementary schools, and serving at summer camps are just a few of the many great examples of our students giving back to the community.

Our Students Are 'AVID' Learners

Our Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program equips students with the skills they need to excel in school and prepares them for future success. Through a comprehensive curriculum that includes organizational strategies and critical thinking skills, students receive support across all subjects. They explore colleges and participate in university field trips. AVID students emerge as leaders and role models within our school, encouraging and inspiring their peers.

Young Scholars

At Langston Hughes, we proudly support 210 Young Scholars. This program is dedicated to nurturing students with high academic potential who may encounter additional barriers to accessing and succeeding in advanced programs. Our Young Scholars receive the support, encouragement, and tools they need to thrive in rigorous coursework.

Music Is Part of the Culture at Langston Hughes

Our music department is truly outstanding! From school-wide assemblies to community events, our strings, band, and chorus programs are constantly in the spotlight. This year, our chorus students had the honor of performing at the Hunters Woods Senior Living Facility and the Gatehouse Administration Center. Additionally, our orchestra program hosted Panther Orchestra Day in collaboration with Rachel Carson Middle School, bringing together elementary musicians from across the area to perform and learn from one another.

Theater Arts

Each year, our theater arts program delivers a show-stopping production that captivates the entire community! Our annual musical is the most sought-after ticket in town. This year, we're thrilled to present Matilda.

Panthers Have a Voice

The Langston Hughes Student Council (SCA) is a diverse group of students who represent the voice of LHMS and actively organize and promote events for our school community. Our Fall Festival was a huge success, filled with Trunk or Treating, games, and dancing. We are eagerly anticipating our upcoming I See Me in Reston cultural event this spring.

Langston Hughes After School

Our students love our school so much that they never want to leave! We offer a diverse range of after-school activities that cater to everyone's interests. After school activities encourage students to interact with their peers, build friendships, and develop their social skills. Whether it's sports or STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math), our club schedule is brimming with creative opportunities for students to explore and develop their passions. Our running program includes both cross country and track. Students can push their physical limits, leading to improved cardiovascular health and overall fitness. Beyond the physical benefits, the program promotes mental resilience, stress reduction, and a sense of accomplishment, contributing to improved mental well-being. The after school art club provides a creative outlet for students to express themselves through various artistic mediums, fostering their imagination and problem-solving skills.

Peer Buddies

For over a decade, Panthers have participated in our Peer Buddies program. This is a mentoring program that supports our students with intellectual disabilities. Some activities the Buddies assist with include reading books, playing games, talking, and just having fun!
