Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

When can I visit the library?

Students can visit the library at the following times:

  • From 7:20 a.m. until 7:30 (students must be in class by 7:30 a.m.)

  • During class with a pass from a teacher (students without a pass will be sent back to class)

  • With a class for instruction

  • During lunch, if there are library passes available (students must eat lunch in the cafeteria first, no food is allowed in the library)

  • After school any day until 2:30

Do I need a library card?

No. You will use your student ID number (the same number used to login to the computer) to check out books.

How many books may I check out?

Students may check out as many books as they can manage responsibly. That means as many books as you can keep track of, return on time (or remember to renew), and not lose.

How long may I keep a book?

You can check out a book for 3 weeks and can renew it for an additional 3 weeks. That said, please return books as soon as you’re finished with them so that others can read and enjoy them!

Where do I return books?

You may return books to the "book return" slot in the circulation desk. Sometimes you will also see book return boxes placed around the building, so feel free to use those.

If I have overdue books, may I check out more books?

Yes, you can. We’ll ask you where the overdue books are and help you renew them or come up with a strategy to return them.

Are there fines for overdue books?

At this time, there are no fines for overdue materials.

What do I do if I lose a book, or it gets really damaged?

Talk to a librarian as soon as possible. We understand that sometimes library materials get lost or damaged: we care most about your honesty and ability to take responsibility for what happened, and will help to figure out a plan.

Can I volunteer in the library?

Yes, we welcome both student and parent volunteers. Please talk to a librarian!

How do I pay my bill for a lost book?

Thank you for helping your student take responsibility toward replacing library books they have borrowed but lost. You can easily make a payment through My School Bucks, the same system that FCPS uses for other payments (field trips, food, replacement laptop chargers, etc.)

How to pay:

  1. Go to www.myschoolbucks.com and login to your parent/guardian account.
  2. Click on our school Store.

    MSB

  3. If needed, click VIEW ALL (not Featured).
  4. Click on Library Fines & Lost Books.

    Lostbooks

  5. Enter the amount for the lost book(s) found in your email from LHMS Library (FCPS).

Please note: If reimbursing the school for the lost book(s) is a financial hardship for your family,
you may (a) make a donation in any amount toward the re-purchase of the books, or (b) talk to
a school librarian about your student providing volunteer service to the school library.

  6. REPLY to the email you received from LHMS Library to let the librarian
know that you have paid for the lost book(s) or need to discuss the issue. Once we receive
your email we can remove the book(s) from your student’s record.
